"Mongols have nothing in common with the Chinese."

Tsendambyn Batbayar has a strong opinion about Chinese people, reflecting a general attitude in Mongolia. In his book Modern Mongolia: A concise history, he states in the introduction:

Mongols have nothing in common with the Chinese. Not only is their language totally unrelated, but also their way of life is completely different. Mongolia's population is quite homogeneous. Over 90 percent of the population is made up of subgroups of the Mongol nationality, the largest being the Khalkha (70 percent of the total).

quite a good picture to demonstrate the "difference"!
After having been in Mongolia for about 5 years, would you be able to tell the difference between Mongols and Chinese?

good question - of course there are some distinct physical features, but more interesting is the belt. To see the difference between a Mongolian and Chinese man look at their belly. If the belt is on there it is probably a Chinese. If it is under the belly, you can be sure it is a Mongolian.
Even in the picture it seems Jian Zemin still has the traditional belt quite high.

I think Jiang Jimin looks totally ridiculous in the Mongol deel -- and even wearing it, doesn't look remotely Mongolian. I lived in Mongolia for 2.5 years, returned for repeated trips and my wife is Mongolian... he looks Chinese, and the difference is obvious. Just the expression on former Premier Jimin's face says "Hi! I'm undoubtedly Chinese!"

Mongolians, some Koreans, some Hungarians, some northern chinese (shinjaan, uigur, most of the inner mongolians), some southern russian (buriyatia, kalmik etc), some Afghani (i.e Hazari), Native americans have a blue mark on their back at birth and eventually disappear. Tha is distinct mongolian feature. No chinese babies ever get that mark. Compared to other asian ppl mongolians are taller and bigger. One Brittish scientist traces mongolian gene all over the world except south america, africa and australia. It is said that 1 out of 6 person in the world has mongolian blood.
