Mongolia's Genghis Khan Craze #1152: Airport renamed
Now that even the airport is being renamed Chinggis Khaan, I suppose it is only a matter of time before Ulaanbaatar will turn into Chinggis Khot.

UBPost reported on it a while back. One would hope they'd finally begin to come up with something more original.
On the other hand, a lot of airports are named after famous historical personalities. Too bad Gelenhuu doesn't seem to qualify as name for Buyant-Uhaa. At least the decision is not as far off or expensive as relocating the capital to Harhorin or re-introducing the administrative structure as it was under the Manchu.
Yan, I totally missed it, but thanks for pointing this out. I was in a room with five people when I heard it and none of us knew, no-one believed it even. We called the airport information service to confirm.
Ya-nahhhhhhh... They're really doing it, huh? What about all the wonderful patriots, poets, scholars, and leaders Mongolia has had? Why not name it after Zanabaazar, Genden (the man who slapped Stalin), Sukhbaatar, or Zorig?
Sukhbaatar has already named an aimag, a town, and - kind of - the capital named after him.
Naming something "Chinggis xyz" has certainly been long overdone, but the airport is really one of the less stupid things to name after CK. At least as long as there's no real aviation pioneer available.
I think when it comes to people that are popular in Mongolia and also known abroad, there is really not much choice, apart from Chinggis' family and Sukhbaatar, and maybe Queen Mandukhai.
What a beautiful name was BUYANT UKHAA... The next thing will be a sausage, of course it will not be "Chingis sausage", but something like "Chingisiin zoog"...What a sorry imagination these people have.
I think that the reason Mongolia is so crazed over Chinggis is because they want to let the world know the real history of Chinggis Khaan. Many people around the world think that Chinggis is a wild maniac that concord many countries without a cause. The world needs to know the REAL story. So todays Mongolians (no longer under Russian control) are for the first time in a long time are trying to figure out who they really are by reliving the Mongolian history. What's wrong with that?
