Japan's Genghis Khan Craze #1154: Shall we do a movie?
Japan is preparing another movie on Chinggis Khaan. Arrangements have been made with the Mongolian side, who will contribute as well. To make it a little more easy to look authentic they will film during the high season in the most touristy places.

According to Japanese newspapers, Mr. Kadokawa (producer of the film) met Mongolian Prime Minister to ask the preparation of 20,000 extras from countryside for this film shoot. WITHOUT CHARGE!!! It sounds ridiculous. He must have no idea about Mongolia. “20,000 people” means almost 1% of the whole Mongolian population.
Already they have an agreement to use 5,000 Mongolian military soldiers as extras, newspapers said. I was wondering if the US government would be happy about it, because the US is the top foreign donor to the Mongolian army. Then, Mongolian soldiers are used for a Japanese film shoot. Hahaha,
Chinggis role will be played by a Japanese actor, “Takashi Sorimachi”, not by a Mongolian actor.
If you read Japanese, see newspaper links

Unforetunately I don't read Japanese, but this is already quite interesting. I would suggest maybe a Mongolian film maker (Khishigt, or someone) can make a film on the First Samurai with 1% of the Japanese population!
I guess that wouldn't be all that impossible - once he'd have gathered the support of some National Great-Japan 2750 Comission :)
I think it's great that Japan has become such a good friend of Mongolia, and In know from having lived there for a year that Japanese seem really to feek some kinship with Mongolia -- perhaps seeing them as distant cousins.
To be fair to the Japanese film-makers, they probably did not consider the relative proportion of actors requested to the size of the overall national population. They most likely just set a number typical to the scale of production they are used to. However, with all the innovations in film-making and computer-enhanced technology, technicians could probably make 2,000 or maybe as few as even 200 LOOK like 20,000.
I agree with Ariel Wyckoff. It's of course what the technicians have to do.
But my opinion for the Chinggis role, it'd be better for a Mongolian actor to role. Additionally, I am a Mongolian.
Gosh,
Japanese man as a Chingis khan??
Never heard of it :o(
